Top Selling Hatchbacks In October 2019 – Maruti Leads The Segment

Maruti S-Presso Review Test Drive

The Maruti Alto, Swift and the Baleno are the most selling hatchbacks in their respective segments.

The hatchback segment largely attracts the price-sensitive buyers of India. It is also the segment that has the most first-time car buyers. Unlike September 2019, when all 3 divisions – Entry-level hatchbacks, compact hatchbacks and premium hatchbacks had negative YoY growth, October 2019 has shown some positive results. At the end of the month, the sales report shows 18%, -11% and 0% YoY growth for the 3 segments respectively.

Reigning this segment for years now is Maruti’s Alto after selling 17,903 units in October 2019. Despite staggering numbers, the entry hatchback has declined -19% in sales. The segment also has a new entrant, the Maruti S-Presso selling 10,634 units for the company. A lot has been said about the boxty looks of this car but it seems that the product is cashing in all the buzz. Taking the 2nd position on the list, the S-Presso has sold double of what is raked in by the Renault Kwid. The segment has improved from scoring -30% last month to 18% in October 2019.

The compact hatchback segment has the most products on offer in this division. While the YoY of September 2019 was -31%, in October 2019 the damage is a little less at -11%. Just like last month, the Maruti Swift continues to be the top-selling product after selling 19,401 units in October 2019. It also has a positive YoY figure at 13% followed by 35% scored by the Maruti WagonR at the 2nd position. The Ford Figo continues to show astonishing growth with 1388% on its report card. The Tata Bolt shows the steepest decline at -82%.

The premium hatchback segment has come a long way from scoring -25% in September 2019 to 0% in October 2019. The Maruti Baleno continues to ace the segment gathering 16,237 unit sales, closely followed by the Hyundai i20 in the 2nd position selling 14,683 units. The Ford Freestyle suffered the steepest decline with -74% on its report card.
