The Skoda India EV factory will manufacture a compact EV

Skoda Auto Volkswagen India could set up an electric vehicle (EV) factory in the second half of this decade in the country, about the same time Maruti’s electric car factory is slated to become operational.

This was revealed recently by the Global CEO of Skoda Auto, Thomas Schaefer, who also hinted that the Indian subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group could manufacture “affordable EVs” in India for emerging markets in the future.

Schaefer said a small electric car based on the Volkswagen Group’s platform could be used in India as, according to him, there are many regions in the world that “need more affordable entry EVs”.

Skoda will introduce a new car which will be positioned below the Kushaq in the future

While the Skoda India EV factory is being considered, the Czech carmaker is currently looking to the pros and cons of introducing its Enyaq iV in the market here.

It is also well-known that Skoda Auto Volkswagen is working on a new sub-4-metre SUV under its India 2.5 project, after having invested heavily on 4 cars namely Skoda’s Kushaq, and Slavia and Volkswagen’s Taigun and Virtus.

Schaefer believes India will play a significant role in the Volkswagen Group’s future for the next 10-15 years by catering to the needs of the southeast Asian and African markets for cars powered by petrol and electricity.
