Tata Motors Evaluating Mahindra Thar & Maruti Jimny Rival

Tata Sierra EV Side
New gen Tata Sierra to compete with Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny

Tata Sierra will be the new lifestyle vehicle for the company?

To expand its market presence, Tata Motors is considering the development of a rugged 4X4 SUV to compete with the Mahindra Thar and Maruti Jimny, it is likely to be the new gen Sierra.

As the Indian carmaker looks to churn out big volumes and improve their market share in the years ahead, it is preparing to introduce a distinct offering in the increasingly competitive SUV segment.

The Indian automobile market has seen a surge in demand for robust and rugged vehicles, evident from the popularity of lifestyle SUVs like Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki Jimny.

Tata Motors has a history of offering lifestyle-oriented SUVs like the iconic Safari, Sierra, Hexa, etc. The company doesn’t offer any 4×4 equipped vehicle currently in their lineup. However, they showcased the Sierra EV concept and Harrier EV concept at the 2023 Auto Expo that are expected to get 4WD in their production form.

Tata doesn’t want the upcoming SUV to be a “me-too” product but will introduce a vehicle with unique features and characteristics. They want it to have some differentiation compared to the lifestyle SUVs on sale currently. We can expect the new lifestyle vehicle to be based on the Sierra concept since it looks very different and carries the old design DNA of the iconic model.

The production version of the Tata Sierra EV is likely to go on sale by 2025. We hope they also introduce petrol and diesel variants of the SUV to make it more desirable for a wider audience.

Mahindra is also developing an electric version of the Thar. The UV maker will reveal the Thar.e concept on 15th August at an upcoming event in South Africa.
