Tata Sumo, Bolt Discontinued; Safari Next?

Tata Sumo

Tata Motors is not planning to update the Sumo and the Bolt hatchback with safety updates and has stopped producing them too.

The current generation of the Sumo does not have any safety tech incorporated

Tata Motors has stopped the production of the Sumo and Bolt. With the upcoming safety and emission norms, many vehicle models will now be discontinued. As for the vehicles, it would be too expensive to update these vehicles to meet the mandatory norms and thus the production of the Sumo and Bolt has been discontinued.

Launched in 1994, the Tata Sumo was introduced as the Sumo Gold in 2011. It is powered by a 3.0-litre, turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine which produces 85 BHP at 3000 RPM and 250 Nm at 1000-2000 RPM. The engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. The Sumo could not be updated with safety tech like ABS, reverse parking sensors, driver-seat belt reminder and high-speed alert. However, dealers will continue selling the existing inventory.

Coming to the Tata Bolt, the hatchback is also facing the end. The car is based on Tata’s older X1 platform. The automaker has now introduced the new ALFA platform and its Impact 2.0 design language which will be followed by the vehicles which will be launched. The sales of the Bolt dipped and stood to only 30 units in March 2019. Tata Motors is also launching the Altroz later this year which will sit above the Tiago in the company’s lineup.

The next vehicle which could face discontinuation is the Tata Safari. The current generation of the Safari would not be able to meet the upcoming safety and emission norms and so it might face the same fate as many other vehicles have. Tata Motors has introduced many cars in due time like the Nexon, Harrier, Hexa, Tigor and Tiago. The company has also showcased the Buzzard 7-seater SUV and the Altroz hatchback at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
