The month-on-month (MoM) comparison has been made for a realistic representation of car sales

Car sales took a turn for the worse in May 2021 as every manufacturer, including market leader Maruti Suzuki, struggled to find buyers.

However, as the industry saw car sales drop from April 2021, which in itself fared poorly in comparison with March 2021, Hyundai’s Creta rose to the top.

The South Korean manufacturer retailed 7527 units of the compact SUV, which is a 40 percent MoM degrowth. In second place came the Maruti Suzuki Swift, which found 7005 buyers, followed by the Kia Sonet with 6627 unit sales.

Fourth-placed Nexon (6439 units) was Tata’s best-selling car for the month of May, while the Maruti Dzire came next, having registered sales of 5819 units.

Then came the Venue sub-4-metre SUV from Hyundai that recorded close to 4840 unit sales and it was followed very closely by the Maruti Baleno with 4803 units to its name.

The Seltos from Kia, like pretty much every other vehicle in the top 25 May 2021 car sales list lost a huge chunk of its sales in comparison with April 2021. It had recorded sales of 4277 units.

Ninth-placed Hyundai Grand i10 NIOS found 3804 takers, while the Mahindra Bolero, with 3517 unit sales, completed the top 10.

Top performers like the Maruti Alto (3220 units), Wagon R (2086 units) and Vitara Brezza (2648 units ) had a poor outing this past month, while premium hatchbacks like the Hyundai i20 (3440 units) and Tata Altroz (2896 units) shared the same fate.

Ruefully, apart from the Tata Safari (1536 units), which recorded a 1 percent MoM growth, no other car in the May 2021 top 25 car sales list posted growth.

Only 2 sedans (compact ones that too) featured in the top 25 list
