UM Imports Flash 125, Nitrox 150 Bikes In India For R&D Purpose

The UM Flash 125 and Nitrox 150 motorcycles could make it to India as entry-level offerings while its first product will be a 400cc cruiser bike for India.

Step-through scooters aren’t a popular choice in India at present

UM Motorcycles has been enthusiastic about the Indian market and also showcased its range of products including the X-Street series and the Renegade cruisers at the 2014 Auto Expo. The automaker will be operating in India through a joint venture with Lohia Auto and has confirmed that its first product for the country will be a 400cc cruiser motorcycle equipped with ABS. Now, the US-based manufacturer has imported two new motorcycles namely the Flash 125 scooter and Nitrox 150 bike for R&D purposes and is likely to launch the same in the future.

Starting with the Flash 125, the step-through scooter is powered by a 125cc single-cylinder, 4-stroke, air-cooled engine tuned to produce 8.84 BHP of power at 7000 RPM and 9 Nm of torque at 6000 RPM, paired to a 4-speed gearbox. The bike rides on 17-inch alloys with anti-flat tyres and gets a front disc and rear drum brake setup. While India has had step-through scooters in the past (Bajaj M80), the body style is not so popular in the country at present and it will be interesting to see how UM will position the model in the market.

The second motorcycle imported is the UM Nitrox 150 that is powered by a 149.4cc single-cylinder, air-cooled engine tuned to churn out 8.5 BHP of power at 8000 RPM and 10 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed gearbox. The bike gets a conventional body style while the all black engine looks sporty on the commuter. In addition, the Nitrox gets anti-flat tyres, LED turn indicators, blind-spot mirrors, 5-spoke alloy wheels among other features and will be competing with the Bajaj Discover, Yamaha SZ-R, Hero Achiever and the likes in the segment.

UM Motorcycles is taking a top-down approach in India and will be launching its 400cc cruiser first that will compete with the offerings from Royal Enfield as well as the upcoming Bajaj Pulsar CS 400. The Flash 125 is likely to be priced between Rs. 40,000-50,000/- (ex-showroom) while the Nitrox 150 could be priced between Rs. 50,000-60,000/- (ex-showroom). Both the bikes could hit the showrooms in 2016.
