Volkswagen ID Cross Revealed, Compact Electric Crossover

Volkswagen has revealed the new ID Cross, marking the brand’s entry into the compact electric crossover segment. Based on the same MEB+ platform as the recently unveiled ID Polo, the new EV combines crossover styling with the underpinnings and electric powertrain of its hatchback sibling.

The ID Cross is already available to order in select international markets, with prices starting at €27,995 (approximately Rs. 30.8 lakhs), making it around €3000 more expensive than the ID Polo.

The ID Cross is the second Volkswagen model to adopt the company’s latest “Pure Positive” design philosophy. Its upright front fascia features connected LED headlamps, an illuminated Volkswagen logo and a full-width black trim element. A redesigned bumper with silver skid-plate styling and black body cladding gives the crossover a more rugged appearance.

From the side, the ID Cross gets pronounced wheel arch cladding, 18-inch alloy wheels and a distinctive three-slat treatment on the rear quarter panel. At the back, the crossover features a full-width LED light bar, illuminated VW badge, roof spoiler and a chunky rear bumper.

Measuring 4153 mm in length, the ID Cross is slightly longer and taller than the ID Polo while retaining a nearly identical wheelbase.

Inside, the ID Cross carries over the dashboard design from the ID Polo. A 12.9-inch freestanding touchscreen infotainment system sits at the centre of the dashboard, accompanied by a 10.25-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a two-spoke steering wheel.

Volkswagen has retained several physical controls on the steering wheel and centre console, while the floating centre console creates additional storage space inside the cabin. The luggage compartment offers a claimed capacity of 475 litres.

Equipment includes dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a 360-degree camera, vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, 12-way electrically adjustable front seats, automatic parking assist and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Buyers can also opt for features such as massage front seats, a panoramic glass roof and an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system.

The ID Cross is offered with two battery choices: a 37 kWh pack and a larger 52 kWh unit. Both versions drive the front wheels through a single electric motor producing up to 290 Nm of torque.

The smaller battery is available in two power outputs of 116 HP and 135 HP, while the larger 52 kWh battery develops 211 HP. Volkswagen claims the most powerful version can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 7.1 seconds.

Depending on the battery and variant, the ID Cross offers a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 427 km. DC fast charging supports up to 90 kW with the smaller battery and 105 kW with the larger pack, allowing a 10-80 percent charge in approximately 23-24 minutes.
