Volvo XC40 India Details Revealed, Launch By Mid-2018

2018 Volvo XC40 Front And Side

Volvo XC40 India details have been revealed, the SUV has been showcased on the company’s website.

The Volvo XC40 is expected to be priced in the range of Rs. 37-42 lakhs (ex-showroom)

Volvo unveiled the XC40 recently to take on the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. The car has been listed on Volvo India’s official website now and the launch has been scheduled to happen in the first half of 2018. The company is betting big on SUVs and very recently launched the XC60 SUV in India priced at Rs. 55.90 lakhs (ex-showroom).

The India-bound Volvo XC40 will be offered in two engine options – a 2.0-litre diesel (D4) and a 2.0-litre petrol (T5). The 2.0-litre turbocharged oil-burner unit produces 188 HP of power and 400 Nm of torque while the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol motor is good for 247 HP and 350 Nm of torque. Both the powertrains will come paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox and will get AWD as standard.

The diesel D4 will be available in two variants – Momentum and Inscription while the petrol T5 will come in the R-Design form only. Borrowing design cues from the bigger XC60 and XC90, the XC40 gets Volvo’s signature Thor’s hammer inspired LED DRLs and D-shaped LED tail-lights. The petrol will look sportier when compared to the diesel, all thanks to the 5-spoke 18-inch alloy wheels and black treatment on the roof and ORVMs.

The baby SUV gets an interior layout as seen in the other Volvo SUVs. There is a 3-spoke multi-function steering wheel, 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, vertical AC vents with chrome inserts and a full-digital instrument console. The Inscription trim will add powered driver’s seat with memory function, ambient lighting, leather upholstery and wood inlays to the cabin. The R-Design petrol variant will get a stiffer suspension setup, as part of a Sports chassis, for a sportier drive.

Powertrain done, exteriors and interiors done, we aren’t really talking Volvo if we aren’t talking about safety. The XC40, in addition to the usual safety technology like airbags and ABS with EBD, will also get the radar-based safety functions like City Safety, Pilot Assist, various collision mitigation systems and blind spot information system (BLIS). At the time of launch, additionally, a ‘First Edition’ variant will also be launched offering extra features like active headlights, handsfree and powered tail-gate, wireless mobile charging and a Harman Kardon sound system.

The vehicle will be sold as a Completely Built Unit (CBU) as Volvo’s plant in Karnataka can only make cars on the SPA (Scalable Platform Architecture). The XC40 is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that will underpin future Volvo 40 and 30-series cars.
