Yamaha is expected to expand its sportbike lineup in India with the launch of the new YZF-R2 on August 27, 2026. The upcoming motorcycle is likely to be positioned above the R15, giving the company a stronger presence in the 200cc fully-faired motorcycle segment.
An invitation shared by Yamaha hints at an event scheduled for August 27 in Chennai, where the new motorcycle is expected to make its debut. While the company has not officially confirmed the model name or specifications, the R2 has been widely linked to the upcoming launch.
The Yamaha R2 is expected to be developed and manufactured in India, similar to the R15. Reports suggest it could be powered by a new 200 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine, which may be derived from the existing 155 cc motor used in the R15. Official performance figures, however, are yet to be announced.
The R15 will continue to remain on sale alongside the new model. Yamaha is also expected to retain the MT-15 and XSR155 in its Indian lineup, allowing the R2 to slot between the 155 cc motorcycles and the brand’s larger-capacity offerings.
Once launched, the Yamaha R2 is expected to compete with motorcycles such as the KTM RC 200 and the Hero Karizma XMR 210 in the entry-level performance motorcycle segment.
Further details, including specifications, features and pricing, are expected to be announced at the official launch event later this month.
