Mercedes-Benz has taken wraps off the 2019 G-Class SUV at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The vehicle has stood the test of time and has been an icon for the German automaker. The latest iteration gets a substantial number of updates over its predecessor but still stays true to the original and traditional G-Class.

Starting off with the design and looks. The 2019 Mercedes G-Class particularly has the G-Class silhouette and gets tweaks to the front end with redesigned LED headlights, new three-slat grille and a revised bumper. There are new alloy wheels and redesigned LED tail-lights. The vehicle has grown in terms of size when compared to the previous model. It is 53 mm longer, 121 mm wider and 8 mm taller. This should solve the problem of lack of space inside the car.

Move into the cabin of the 2019 Mercedes G-Class and you’ll notice the drastic changes inside. The design of the dashboard layout is all-new yet familiar. There are analogue gauges for the instrument cluster but customers can order for a 12.3-inch digital display to match the other 12.3-inch display for the infotainment. This unit is identical to the one on the E-Class and S-Class. While the aircon vents have a nice design to them, there are touch-sensitive switches below them to operate the infotainment screen. There is a standard audio system featuring 7-speakers while Mercedes is also offering a 16-speaker Burmester Surround sound system as optional.

The base G650 trim will come powered by a 4.0-litre V8 twin-turbocharged petrol engine with 415 HP of power and 610 Nm of torque. Not enough? Opt for the G63 AMG variant and you get the same 4.0-litre V8 motor in a higher state of tune. The powertrain in the G63 AMG guise belts out 603 HP of power and 700 Nm of torque. Both the trims get a 9-speed automatic transmission with permanent AWD, live rear axle and three differential locks as standard. The SUV is expected to go on sale in the US in late 2018 and prices will be announced closer to launch.
