Entry-level cars are not finding as many buyers like before

If we look at the August 2021 hatchback sales charts for the entry- and mid-level and premium vehicles, it is clear that buyers these days prefer cars from a higher price point.

However, India still remains a developing country and buying a car is still a far-fetched dream dream for many a family. When they do save up the money to get a new car (most go for used cars these days), their first choice is the Maruti Alto.

The Maruti S-Presso sold 6011 fewer units than its stablemate, while third-placed Renault Kwid found 2969 new homes this past month.

In all, the cars in the segment registered sales of 23,462 units, which is a 2 percent drop when compared to their sales figure in the same month a year ago.

None of the cars could post positive sales growth!

Unlike the months that passed, in August, it was the Swift which took the first spot in the hatchback sales list.

Its 12,483 unit sales could not be matched by the Wagon R which registered sales of 9628 units. The third place in the list went to Hyundai’s Grand i10 NIOS which found just over 8000 new buyers.

Tata’s Tiago came fourth with 5658 unit sales, followed by the Maruti Ignis which was driven home by 2053 people and the Santro which recorded 1731 unit sales.

The others did not do well and overall sales of cars in the segment stood at 39,641 units, which is a 29 percent decline in year-on-year (YoY) sales.

This segment grew by 21 percent YoY

The Baleno from Maruti topped the August 2021 premium hatchback sales, which should not be surprising, for it was the best-selling car in the country last month.

Hyundai’s i20 (7340 units) did better than the Tata Altroz (6175 units) this time around, while the Toyota Glanza (1832 units) managed to stay ahead of the Volkswagen Polo (1306 units).

Overall, the cars in the segment registered sales of 33,012 which equals to a YoY growth in sales of 21 percent.
