Bajaj Not Buying Ducati; Harley Out Too

2017 Ducati 1299 Panigale R Side

Bajaj not buying Ducati, as the former is on the look out for a lazy style riding motorcycle brand.

Bajaj was rumoured to be in final talks of acquiring Ducati

Recent reports suggested that Bajaj was in final talks of acquiring Italian super bike maker Ducati, however, all those reports and rumours that Bajaj, TVS, Hero MotoCorp, Royal Enfield and Harley-Davidson were interested in acquiring Ducati now stand void.

They were only rumours unnecessarily spread to drive the share prices of the respective brand, be it Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp, TVS Motor or Eicher Motors (owner of Royal Enfield). Recently at an annual general meeting, Bajaj top boss hinted that the company might be acquiring a new motorcycle brand and talks for the same are in the final stages.

Bajaj already owns a 48 percent stake in KTM which is into selling performance motorcycles and acquiring Ducati which is again a brand that specialises in performance motorcycles doesn’t make sense at all. On the contrary, Bajaj intends to buy a lazy style riding motorcycle brand which clearly Ducati isn’t. Ducati makes performance motorcycles that even multiple MotoGP champions find difficult to tame.

While Bajaj caters to the commuter segment, KTM caters to the performance segments, Husqvarna caters to the retro segment and clearly the lazy style riding motorcycles are the ones missing from Bajaj’s portfolio. Bajaj is expected to acquire another motorcycle brand but we aren’t sure as to which particular brand it is.

Ever since Audi (the brand that owns Ducati) has put Ducati up for sale, there have been innumerous rumours circulating. It still remains to be seen how and who will acquire the Ducati brand.
