The central government is reportedly evaluating a set of proposals aimed at simplifying vehicle-related services and reducing the need for citizens to visit Regional Transport Offices (RTOs).
Among the measures under consideration is an extension of the validity period of driving licences. Currently, a driving licence issued to a private vehicle owner is generally valid for 20 years or until the holder reaches a specified age limit. The proposed change could allow licences to remain valid until the holder turns 50 years old, potentially reducing the frequency of renewals for many motorists.
Authorities are also exploring the possibility of making vehicle ownership transfers and permit renewal processes completely digital. If implemented, these services could be carried out online without requiring applicants to visit transport department offices in person.
The proposed reforms are part of broader efforts to improve convenience and streamline interactions between citizens and government services. Officials believe digital processing could help reduce paperwork, shorten waiting times and make transport-related services more accessible.
According to officials familiar with the discussions, online systems would continue to collect applicable fees for licence issuance and renewals, ensuring that state government revenues remain unaffected.
The government is also examining ways to strengthen enforcement through technology. Officials have indicated that a system linking traffic violations to penalty points on driving licences could play a larger role in monitoring driver behaviour. Such a mechanism could potentially lead to licence suspension or cancellation in cases of repeated violations.
While the proposals are still under consideration and no official rollout timeline has been announced, they signal the government’s intention to modernise transport administration and expand digital service delivery across the country.
