India Made Hyundai Grand i10 Scores 0 Stars In Latin NCAP

After scoring an impressive safety rating of 4 stars in Europe, the Hyundai Grand i10 gets 0 stars for the India spec model at the Latin NCAP.

The India made Grand i10’s shell has been rated unstable

The Grand i10 is currently the largest selling Hyundai car in India, which manages to take the 5th or 6th spot among the top 10 selling cars in India. The popularity of the hatchback is due to its value-for-money pricing along with the good quality being offered for a car in that segment. Now what comes in as a surprise is that the Grand i10 made in India has scored a 0 star safety rating in the Latin NCAP crash test.

The Euro spec Hyundai Grand i10 tested last year by Euro NCAP scored a healthy 4 stars. It was expected to score high considering the long list of safety equipment offered. However, the India spec Grand i10’s base version doesn’t come with airbags, ABS and even seatbelt pretensioners and hence has scored a poor 0 star rating. Also, the body shell of the Grand i10 has been rated as unstable, which means that there is some difference of materials used in India when compared to Europe.

Having said that, most of the crash tests are done with the base variants of the vehicles and under European norms, airbags and ABS is mandatory. It would have been a different story altogether if the higher variants of the India spec Grand i10 would have been tested. India will get stricter safety norms in 2017 and until then such crash test results are expected. The Korean automaker exports the Grand i10 to various countries from India and sold 10,255 units in the domestic market last month.
