JLR Overtakes Audi, Takes 3rd Spot In India’s Luxury Car Market

Mercedes-Benz and BMW hold the first and second position respectively.

JLR has become the only luxury car company to have recorded a growth in 2019

If Jaguar Land Rover’s numbers are to be believed, the Tata Motors-controlled British company has sold more cars than Audi last year, climbing up to the 3rd position in India’s luxury car market. As per the company, JLR has sold 5000 cars in India, more than what Audi and Volkswagen have raked in 2019.

Hence, JLR becomes the first non-German company break into the top 3 while the first and second position continues to be held on by Mercedes-Benz and BMW respectively.

On top of that, JLR has become the only luxury car company to have recorded a growth in 2019 even as each of its competitors logged a fall in sales. The brand has recorded a growth of 9% over 2018 when it sold a total of 4596 units. The company will introduce the I-Pace, new Evoque and Discovery Sport Facelift in India soon.

Talking about the industry as a whole, 2019 was one of the worst years for luxury car sales with the combined volumes of four players, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Audi and Volvo falling to 35,274 units, a decline of 13% compared to 40,340 units clocked in 2018.

Apparently, Audi witnessed the worst fall in a decade posting a decline of 29% to 4594 units in 2019.

Despite the slowdown, these luxury carmakers have lined-up no less than two dozen launches this year including at least three all-electric cars, which is a first by them.
