KTM Working On 890cc Engine

KTM’s new engine might be a larger displacement derivative of the 790cc LC8c parallel twin engine.

The upcoming 890cc engine could be a reworked version of the 790 cc LC8c engine with a higher power output

It’s not too long ago when KTM introduced the Duke 790 naked motorcycle to the world. Also known as the scalpel, it is powered by a newly developed 790cc parallel-twin engine, which is made as compact as possible. Now, it has been learnt that KTM is developing a new 890cc engine, which could be derived from the existing 790cc engine, already available with the Austrian manufacturer. The upcoming 890cc engine could also be developed to bridge the gap between the 790cc and the 1050cc motorcycles.

The news of the 890cc engine in question comes after the reports of the Austrian brand working on a 500cc twin-cylinder motorcycle for markets like India. KTM seems to be looking to make a more powerful version of the 790. The development of the new engine will also open a new range of products or revamp the existing line-up of products.

The new 890cc engine will be a reworked version of the KTM 790cc LC8c engine. This will include changing the dimensions of the bore and stroke of the current engine to accommodate a larger 890cc displacement. Expect a few internal changes as well to handle the higher power figures which the new engine would pump out. The new engine will also show a significant rise in power and torque output, creating the possibilities of new products. The 790cc parallel-twin motor offers better reliability and is also future proof. Expect the new 890cc engine to follow the same path.

Early hints suggest that KTM could go about making a supermoto. Currently, they only have the 690 SMC R which is a single-cylinder offering. With the better refinement and reliability, KTM could bring a supermoto rival that could challenge the territory of the Ducati Hypermotard 950 and the Aprilia Dorsoduro 900. There also could be a possibility of an R model of the 790 Duke. There is a likelihood of KTM showcasing the new prototype of the 890cc engine at the EICMA 2019 but until then its all news.
