Maruti Suzuki will be launching the Celerio diesel in the following weeks and powering the hatchback will be a newly developed 793cc diesel engine under the hood, the smallest diesel motor to go into production in the country. Now ahead of the official launch expected on 3rd June, details of this diesel unit have been leaked online from an official sales presentation. This compact two-cylinder unit will be producing 47.65 PS of power at 3500 RPM and 125 Nm of torque at 2000 RPM.

The Maruti Celerio’s 793cc diesel engine produces more torque output at 0.16 Nm/cc than the 1248cc engine on the Maruti Swift that does at 0.15 Nm/cc. The engine is fitted with a compact turbocharger and weighs the lightest at a bare minimum of 89 kgs, courtesy of the all aluminium engine block. It also weighs 60 percent lesser than the conventional cast iron engines. To gain perspective, the other small capacity diesel engines weigh the following – Maruti Swift (128 kgs), Hyundai Grand i10 (151 kgs), Honda Amaze (156 kgs) and Renault Duster (163 kgs).

Furthermore, the Celerio diesel will get a hydraulic clutch with optimised engine load on the clutch pedal and clutch release system. The gear ratios have also been optimised to support effortless gear shift operations. Maruti will be offering the Celerio diesel in four variants namely – LDi, VDi, ZDi as well as ZDi (O) with features carried over from the manual variant including dual airbags, ABS, EBD, Bluetooth connectivity, steering mounted controls, MID unit, keyless entry, central locking system, among others.

Lastly, the 2015 Maruti Celerio diesel will be the most fuel efficient vehicle in the country when it hits the showrooms, returning an ARAI certified figure of 27.62 km/l. The hatchback is expected to be offered with the 5-speed manual gearbox and an AMT could be introduced at a later stage. With the overwhelming fuel efficiency figures and zippy mobility to offer, the diesel powered Celerio is sure to catch the fancy of the masses. Expect the Celerio diesel to priced around a Rs. 50,000/- premium over the petrol variants.
