Maruti Suzuki Targets 25% Faster Vehicle Development With New Launches

Maruti Suzuki is reportedly working to significantly reduce the time required to develop new vehicles as it prepares for a broad product expansion over the coming years.

The automaker is targeting a reduction in development timelines from around four years to approximately three years. The move is expected to help the company respond more quickly to changing market trends and intensifying competition, particularly in the fast-growing SUV segment.

The strategy coincides with plans to introduce nine new models within the next three years. A majority of these upcoming launches are expected to be utility vehicles, reflecting the segment’s growing importance in the Indian passenger vehicle market.

As vehicle technologies become more diverse, future product programmes are likely to involve multiple powertrain options, including petrol, CNG, hybrid, flex-fuel and electric variants. This has increased the complexity of development processes compared to earlier product cycles that primarily focused on conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.

To support faster execution, Maruti Suzuki is expected to expand the use of digital engineering technologies across various stages of product development. Simulation-based engineering, virtual validation and digital testing tools are expected to play a larger role in reducing reliance on extensive physical testing and shortening development timelines.

Artificial intelligence and machine learning could also become increasingly important in analysing engineering data, identifying potential issues at earlier stages and improving overall development efficiency. Detecting problems before physical prototypes are built may help reduce redesign requirements and speed up vehicle programmes.

The accelerated development strategy is also expected to involve closer collaboration with suppliers. Early supplier participation in engineering, localisation and validation activities can enable parallel progress across multiple stages of development, helping improve readiness before production begins.

Alongside faster development, Maruti Suzuki is also said to be focusing on increasing localisation levels in future products. Higher domestic sourcing of components could strengthen supply chain resilience while reducing dependence on imports and improving responsiveness during production ramp-ups.

The initiative comes as the company prepares for a more diverse product portfolio and expanding manufacturing operations. With SUVs expected to account for a significant share of future volumes, alongside hatchbacks, MPVs and electric vehicles, efficient coordination across engineering, manufacturing and supplier networks is likely to become increasingly critical.

The planned changes highlight how automakers are adapting development processes to manage growing technological complexity and faster product cycles in an increasingly competitive market.
