Maruti Suzuki pilots Wagon R swivel seat to improve accessibility for elderly passengers
Maruti Suzuki India Limited has announced the introduction of a swivel seat option for the Wagon R, marking a move toward making everyday mobility more accessible for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. The feature is being rolled out as a pilot across select cities and is aimed at easing entry and exit for passengers who face mobility challenges.
The swivel seat has been designed to work with the car’s existing structure and does not require replacement of the original OEM seat. According to the company, installation takes around an hour and can be carried out either on new Wagon R models or as a retrofit on existing vehicles. The accessory comes with a three-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
For this initiative, Maruti Suzuki has collaborated with Bengaluru-based startup TRUEAssist Technology Private Limited through its startup incubation programme. Customers can order the swivel seat kit through Maruti Suzuki Arena dealerships, with fitment carried out without structural modification to the vehicle.
The Wagon R’s tall-boy design, which offers ample headroom and legroom, has been cited as a key reason for selecting the model for this accessibility solution. Initially, the swivel seat option is available at over 200 Arena dealerships across 11 cities. The company plans to expand availability further depending on customer response.
Maruti Suzuki has positioned the initiative as part of its broader focus on inclusive and human-centric mobility, aligning with global goals aimed at reducing inequality. As one of India’s highest-selling cars, the Wagon R is expected to help bring accessibility features into the mainstream mass-market segment.
The swivel seat kit has undergone safety testing and certification by the Automotive Research Association of India and meets the required regulatory standards. With this step, Maruti Suzuki aims to address mobility needs beyond conventional buyers and extend practical solutions to a wider section of users.
