Mercedes Confirms “Little G” G-Class, Expected To Debut By 2027

Mercedes Expected To Debut Smaller Version Of G-Class SUV, Will Be Based On MB:EA Platform

Mercedes is set to launch the smaller version of the G-Class SUV in 2027. The internally named “Mercedes Little G” will slot below the electric G580 electric SUV. This lineup will expand the G-Wagon lineup and cater to a larger audience.

Platform

The smaller G-Class will be based on the brand’s MB:EA monocoque platform, unlike the 4×4 ladder frame chassis utilised on the full-size G-Wagon. This platform is used in the likes of the GLC SUV and the C-Class sedan.

The CEO, Ola Kallenius, confirmed that it will be exclusively sold as an EV at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. The little G-Class will have an 800V electric architecture, and the 5th generation battery pack will deliver a range of 700 Km.

Expected Design Cues

The smaller G-Class will retain the characteristics that make the full-size G-Wagon an iconic off-road, centric SUV. However, it will mix those aspects with some of the modern design cues seen on monocoque SUVs.

It is expected that this G-Class will use the lower ‘g’ to denote its smaller size. The smaller G-Class is expected to have a smaller drag coefficient than the full-size G-Wagon. The outgoing G580 has a drag coefficient of 0.44.

Expected Interior Design

The interior of the smaller G-Class will have a completely different interior from the outgoing G-Wagon. It is expected to incorporate design cues from the third-generation Mercedes CLA. The smaller G-Class will also carry a 5 seat design.

The Little G is expected to be equipped with Mercedes’ eATS 2.0 electric motors. This will be different from the Siemens Valeo motors used in the outgoing Mercedes EVs. The new setup is supposed to adopt a 2-speed transmission with multiple changes, which will improve efficiency and enhance the driving experience.

The reports suggest that the smaller version of the G-Class is expected to come with an all-wheel-drive setup. This will also incorporate the G-Wagon’s three mechanical differential locks, maintaining the off-road prowess.

It is expected that the Little G will have a modified version of the GLC’s suspension, which is a double wishbone setup at the front and multi-link setup at the rear. Additionally, the SUV will also have air springs, which will offer ride height, delivering similar off-roading characteristics to the full-size model.

Outlook

The Mercedes “Little G” will be an entry-level SUV for the admirers of the full-size G-Wagon. It will also provide a platform for future performance models, expected in 2028. The incorporation of Mercedes’ axial-flux electrical motors will also be seen in future generations of performance models like the Mercedes-AMG CLA 45.
