Mercedes EQG Concept To Be Showcased At Munich Motor Show

Mercedes EQG concept will closely preview the production model which will be launched in 2024

The Mercedes EQG will be showcased as a concept at the Munich Motor Show to be held this September. This new model will spearhead the roll-out of a new 4×4 sub-brand, likely to be called the ‘G’.

Since Mercedes-Benz has only updated the rugged styling of the G-Class since its launch in 1979 as the G-Wagen, the EQG should look pretty much like the regular G-Class, but with a one-piece grille, new lights, bumpers, a flat floor and new wheels.

On the inside too, there should be changes that show definitively that the car is a part of Mercedes’ electric portfolio. However, the cabin should remain a luxurious place to travel in.

It is expected that the Mercedes EQG concept showcased at the Munich show will closely preview the final production model which is due in 2024.

The EQG will not be based on Mercedes’ new EVA platform. Instead, it will make use of a modified version of the current G-Class’ ladder-frame.

The last Mercedes built will most likely be a G-Class

Since Mercedes has already trademarked EQG 560 and EQG 580 names, it is clear that the electric off-roader will make use of the EQS’ 107.8 kWh battery and twin-motor (combined output of 516 HP and 854 Nm) powertrain.

Given its rather box-like shape, the EQG will not come with the EQS’ 771 km range. However, it should feature rear-wheel steering and will be a true off-roader with a proper 4-wheel-drive system.

As for its prowess on the rough stuff, one might not be wrong in thinking that the EQC 4×4² concept, a one-off model showcased in October last year, was actually built by Mercedes to showcase the abilities of the new EQG.

When it gets launched in 2024, the EQG will take an important position in Mercedes’ all-electric family of passenger cars, though, it will cost more than the regular G-Class.
