The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has instructed operators of Wayside Amenities (WSAs) to accelerate the rollout of vehicle repair workshops and puncture repair facilities across National Highways and expressways. The move is intended to improve roadside assistance for motorists, particularly on highway stretches where mechanical support remains difficult to access.
The directive has been issued through National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), NHAI’s wholly owned subsidiary responsible for the development and management of Wayside Amenities. Field offices have been asked to work with WSA operators to ensure repair-related services are introduced on priority, especially in locations with limited access to roadside mechanical assistance.
According to NHAI, many highway users currently face challenges in obtaining help for tyre punctures and minor mechanical issues, resulting in longer delays and inconvenience during their journeys.
NHLML is expanding a network of Wayside Amenities across India under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. These facilities are designed to offer essential services such as fuel stations, food outlets, restrooms and parking spaces for travellers.
Although vehicle repair workshops and puncture repair units are already permitted under existing agreements with operators, NHAI has now directed that these services be prioritised to strengthen roadside support infrastructure.
The facilities are expected to serve both private vehicle owners and commercial transport operators using the country’s National Highways and expressways.
NHAI said the initiative is expected to minimise vehicle downtime while improving convenience and safety for highway users. By increasing access to basic repair services, authorities aim to ensure quicker assistance during breakdowns and reduce disruptions for both passenger and freight traffic.
