Renault Takes Ownership Of Chennai Plant, Acquiring Nissan’s 51% Stake

Renault announced its acquisition of Nissan’s remaining 51% stake in the Chennai manufacturing plant. The French manufacturer now fully owns the facility, known as Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL). This strategic shift reflects Renault’s operations and growth plans in India.

Through this acquisition, Renault aims to establish India as a key pillar of its international expansion strategy. The company emphasised the market’s potential due to its young population and rising demand. India is now central to Renault’s International Game Plan 2027.

Stéphane Deblaise has been appointed as CEO of Renault Group in India, effective from September 1, 2025. He brings strong global experience and expertise across Renault’s value chain. His leadership is expected to accelerate the company’s progress in the Indian market.

Deblaise previously led Renault’s South Korea operations, transforming the Busan site into a technological and industrial hub. It is expected that his success there will guide Renault’s transformation in India. Renault plans to leverage this experience to reposition its brand and operations locally.

Despite Renault’s full ownership, the Chennai plant will continue producing Nissan vehicles as planned. Renault and Nissan will maintain engineering cooperation through their joint R&D centre in India. This ensures continuity and shared innovation in local and global vehicle development.

The Chennai plant has produced over 2.8 million vehicles and 4.6 million engines, and gearboxes since 2010. It exports to more than 100 countries and supports a network of 300 local suppliers. The plant has a production capacity exceeding 400,000 vehicles annually.

Outlook

Renault currently operates over 350 sales outlets and 450 service points across India. This wide network supports its expansion and customer reach in the country. The company remains committed to growing its presence in the fast-evolving Indian auto market.
