Tata Motors has reportedly shelved its plans for performance sub-brand TAMO and the RaceMo sports car isn’t likely to be launched.

Autocar India reveals that Tata Motors might shelve TAMO and RaceMo plan

Earlier this year, Tata Motors revealed its plans to introduce its own performance division with the name of TAMO. TAMO is the short form of Tata Advanced Mobility. The first product under the new sub-brand is the RaceMo sports car. The mid-engined 2-door coupe, unveiled at the 87th Geneva Motor Show, features radical styling and advanced features.

Designed in Italy, the RaceMo is a light weight car built on the MOFlex sandwich structure. It is powered by a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, mated to a 6-speed AMT, developing a peak power figure of 186 BHP. The Revotron unit is capable of taking the car to triple digit speeds in 6 seconds. The RaceMo features technological advancements like over-the-air updates, remote monitoring system and advanced navigation developed by Microsoft. The car comes with paddle-shifters as well.

TAMO RaceMo was expected to be showcased at the Auto Expo next year. The TAMO sub-brand, as a whole, required an investment of around Rs. 250 crores. It has now been learnt that Tata Motors has hinted at investing that amount in its CV department. Company officials believe that the amount required for investment would be better spent in the CV department. This step would involve putting an abrupt halt to the realisation of RaceMo concept.

Had Tata Motors continued with the TAMO project, the RaceMo sports car would have completely transformed the company’s image in the country. Rumours had it that the price point of the sports car would be in the range of Rs. 25-30 Lakhs. There is a lot of hype for such an offering but the problems faced by the main brand Tata Motors cannot be ignored. Whether the results of this decision will be fruitful or not would be clear in the long run only.
