Tata Motors, Castrol India Partner To Recycle Used Engine Oil

Tata Motors and Castrol India have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to introduce a pilot programme focused on creating a structured system for collecting and recycling used engine oil. The initiative will initially be rolled out in Karnataka and aims to improve the handling of waste lubricants generated during routine vehicle servicing.

As part of the pilot, Tata Motors’ authorised sales and service outlets across Karnataka will serve as collection centres for used engine oil. Castrol India will oversee the transportation and channelisation of the collected oil to authorised recycling facilities, while ensuring traceability and quality throughout the process.

The collaboration seeks to address challenges associated with the disposal of used engine oil, which is classified as hazardous waste. By establishing an organised collection and recycling framework, both companies aim to support the development of a more efficient circular economy within India’s automotive sector.

According to Tata Motors, the programme is intended to strengthen responsible waste management practices by connecting service network collection points with certified recycling channels. Castrol India, meanwhile, said the partnership marks its first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) collaboration dedicated to structured used-oil recycling in India. The company added that insights from its previous used-oil collection initiatives in southern India have helped shape the new pilot.

The agreement also builds on the existing relationship between the two companies while supporting their broader sustainability objectives. Tata Motors continues to expand its focus on cleaner mobility solutions, including electric and CNG vehicles, while Castrol India is working towards increasing the use of recycled materials in its lubricant portfolio.

The pilot programme could provide a framework for wider adoption if it proves successful, potentially contributing to more organised management and recycling of used engine oil across the automotive industry.
