Tata Sierra earns 5-star BNCAP rating with strong safety performance
The Tata Sierra has achieved a 5-star safety rating in the latest Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) crash tests, marking a strong performance in both adult and child occupant protection categories. The rating applies across all variants of the SUV, reinforcing its safety credentials in the competitive mid-size SUV segment.
Strong Adult Occupant Protection Performance
In adult occupant protection tests, the Sierra scored 31.14 out of a possible 32 points. During the frontal offset deformable barrier test, the SUV offered good protection to key areas such as the head, neck, pelvis, thighs and feet of the driver. Protection for the chest and lower legs was rated as adequate. On the co-driver side, most critical body regions received good protection, with a slight drop in protection noted for one lower leg area.
In side impact assessments, including both the movable deformable barrier and pole impact tests, the Sierra delivered consistently good protection to vital areas like the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis.
Child Occupant Safety Also Rated Highly
The Sierra also performed well in child occupant protection, scoring 44.73 out of 49 points. The SUV was tested using 18-month-old and 3-year-old child dummies, both placed in rearward-facing child seats.
In frontal impact scenarios, the younger dummy scored close to full marks, while the older dummy achieved a perfect score. Both dummies received full points in side impact tests, indicating strong protection levels.
The Sierra recorded high marks in dynamic testing and achieved a full score for child restraint system (CRS) installation. However, it lost some points in the vehicle assessment category, slightly lowering the overall child safety score.
Safety Features Across Variants
Tata has equipped the Sierra with a comprehensive safety package as standard. This includes six airbags, ABS with EBD, traction control and rear parking sensors. Additional features such as all-wheel disc brakes and an electronic parking brake with auto hold further enhance safety.
Higher variants of the SUV are equipped with more advanced systems, including a 360-degree camera, Level 2 ADAS features, a blind spot monitor and an auto-dimming inside rearview mirror.
Market Positioning
Priced between Rs. 11.49 lakhs and Rs. 21.29 lakhs, the Tata Sierra competes with several popular SUVs in India, including the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Honda Elevate, Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun.
With its strong crash test performance and a wide range of safety features, the Sierra adds to Tata Motors’ growing portfolio of safety-focused vehicles.
