The Kwid seems to be losing its sheen of late

Maruti’s Alto topped the December 2020 hatchback sales and thus, it continues to stay way ahead of other contenders in the small car segment as well.

In all, 18,140 units of the Alto got sold in December, which was more than what the other 3 cars in its class could manage combined.

S-Presso from Maruti fetched 6787 unit sales this past month, while the Kwid did 4335 units and the redi-GO could only find 502 takers.

Only 1 unit of the Figo left Ford’s showrooms last month

Coming to the hatchback segment, the overall sales of which grew by a strong 32 percent year-over-year (YoY), it is the Maruti Suzuki Swift that leads with 18,131 units to its name.

In second place came the Wagon R (17,684 units) and the third spot was taken by the Hyundai Grand i10 and NIOS. The Maruti Celerio (6660 units) and Tata Tiago (6066 units) also managed to find a good number of takers.

However, none of the models in the list come close to the Maruti Ignis, which although is in sixth position in the list, saw its sales rise by 239 percent YoY.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the Hyundai Santro, Mahindra KUV100 and Ford Figo, as all three saw their sales dwindle in the month of December 2020.

Volkswagen is not doing itself any favours by not replacing the aged Polo

The premium hatchback segment continues with its growth once again as the December 2020 hatchback sales chart proves. Leading the pack is the Maruti Baleno, which is out of its competition’s reach with over 18,000 unit sales.

Second-placed Hyundai i20 fetched 8004 units in December, which is a 3 percent increase YoY, but down month-on-month by over a 1000 units.

It is followed by the Tata Altroz, which became the second best-selling Tata product last month. Toyota’s Glanza (2102 units) saw its sales grow YoY, but the Volkswagen Polo, with 1805 unit sales, did not fare well.

Similarly, sales of Honda Jazz and Ford Freestyle declined too. But, overall segment sales rose by a healthy 21 percent.
