Toyota Kirloskar Motor has announced plans to establish a new vehicle manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, marking a significant expansion of its production footprint in India. The upcoming plant will be located in the Bidkin Industrial Area and is expected to commence operations in the first half of 2029.
The new facility is planned with an initial annual production capacity of around 1 lakh vehicles. While detailed product plans remain undisclosed, Toyota has indicated that a new SUV could be the first model to roll out from this plant, with speculation pointing towards the revival of the FJ Cruiser nameplate. The company also intends to use the facility for exports to nearby international markets alongside catering to domestic demand.
The Bidkin Industrial Area is part of the larger Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor initiative, a major infrastructure project aimed at strengthening manufacturing ecosystems across multiple states. Spread over thousands of acres, the industrial zone is being developed in phases with substantial government investment.
The project is being executed by Maharashtra Industrial Township Limited, a joint venture between the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation and the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust. Several companies have already committed investments in the region, including firms in electric mobility and specialty chemicals, signalling Bidkin’s growing importance as an industrial cluster.
Toyota currently operates two manufacturing facilities in Bidadi, Karnataka, which together account for a combined annual production capacity of approximately 3.4 lakh units. These plants manufacture a range of models for the Indian market, including the Innova HyCross, Innova Crysta, Fortuner, Camry, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Hilux.
In addition, select premium models such as the Vellfire and Land Cruiser 300 are imported as completely built units. The company’s existing operations employ thousands of workers and play a key role in Toyota’s domestic and export strategy.
Toyota’s planned Maharashtra facility comes amid a broader product expansion strategy for the Indian market. The company is expected to introduce multiple new models in the coming years, including a more accessible version of the Innova Hycross, an electric MPV, the Corolla Cross and a next-generation Fortuner.
The addition of a third manufacturing plant could help Toyota scale production, diversify its manufacturing base and improve supply chain efficiency as it prepares for future demand, including electrified vehicles.
