Yamaha confirms launch of 700cc and 900cc bikes in India post E20 readiness

Yamaha Motor India has reaffirmed its commitment to launching larger displacement motorcycles in the country, despite ongoing delays. The company plans to introduce models from its 700cc and 900cc line-ups, including the popular MT-07, R7, MT-09 and the upcoming R9. These motorcycles will be imported as Completely Built Units.

The delay stems primarily from new fuel regulations in India. Starting October 2025, all two-wheelers sold in the country must be compliant with E20 fuel, a petrol blend with 20% ethanol. Yamaha officials have clarified that the company’s current big bike portfolio is not yet fully aligned with this requirement, as E20 compliance has not been mandated in several international markets where these bikes are developed and manufactured.

However, Yamaha assures that it already possesses the necessary technology and is actively working toward making its bikes compatible with E20 fuel. Homologation procedures are currently underway, suggesting that the launch timeline may be approaching, although no fixed date has been confirmed yet.

Notably, while the MT-07, R7, MT-09 and R9 are likely candidates for the Indian market, Yamaha is unlikely to introduce the Tenere 700 adventure bike. The brand has cited concerns over the model’s tall seat height, which may not be well-suited for the average Indian rider.

The MT-07 and R7 will feature Yamaha’s proven 689cc parallel-twin engine, while the MT-09 and R9 are powered by an 890cc triple-cylinder engine producing around 119 HP. These additions would mark Yamaha’s re-entry into the premium motorcycle space in India, a segment it has largely stayed away from in recent years.
