The interiors on the U301 appear premium & will get an AMT unit on offer

Part of its compact SUV onslaught for 2015, Mahindra has been working on two brand new SUVs codenamed S101/S102 and the U301 that will be catering to two different markets in the country. While the S101/S102 is based on a monocoque platform and targeted at urban markets; the U301 compact SUV is based on an ladder-frame chassis (also underpinning the new Scorpio) and will be targeting the rural market. To be branded as a mini-Bolero to capitalise on the vehicle’s strong brand image, the interiors of the upcoming U301 have been spotted revealing great details to watch out for.

The spy shot showcases the partially camouflaged interiors on the Mahindra U301 that appears to be almost production ready. The dashboard is covered with chrome bezels surrounding the instrument cluster and switches lending a premium appeal; while the steering wheel is a large unit with the Mahindra logo in the centre. Also spotted on the SUV was a touchscreen infotainment system similar to the one found on the XUV500 located below the rectangular air-con vents with USB and AUX connectivity visible. Bluetooth telephony will be offered as well.

Not seen on the test mule, a multi-function steering wheel is also said to be on offer on the production ready Mahindra U301. In terms of power, the compact SUV will be using the 1.5-litre diesel motor from the Quanto under the hood, paired with a 5-speed manual and an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT). Reports suggest that the top-spec diesel variant will be offered without automatic climate control and customers will have to make do with a manual AC unit instead. Initially to be launched only in a two-wheel drive version, Mahindra is working on a 4-Wheel Drive variant for the U301 that will be launched later in the timeline. The compact SUV will also feature ABS as standard but the same could be skipped on lower variants.
