2026 Mercedes GLB debuts with electric powertrain, increased size & advanced tech

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the second-generation GLB, introducing the SUV in global markets with electric and internal-combustion versions to follow in a phased rollout. The all-electric GLB With EQ Tech (referred to as the GLB EV) is the first to go on sale, replacing the EQB in international markets, while the petrol-powered model will join the lineup soon. Both versions share largely the same design, with only subtle differences in grille treatment and wheel design distinguishing them.

The new GLB continues the boxy stance of its predecessor but grows in size, offering a 60 mm longer wheelbase and increases of up to 98 mm in length and 27 mm in width. Despite being 14 mm lower, Mercedes claims improvements in headroom for passengers across all three rows. The exterior adopts a revised front fascia inspired by the latest CLA, featuring a connected LED headlamp setup and a lower-set grille. The EV gets an enclosed grille with signature star detailing, while the ICE model uses a functional grille featuring an illuminated surround in certain configurations.

Along the sides, refinements include subtly flared wheel arches, flush door handles and a more pronounced glasshouse, contributing to a more planted look. At the rear, the standout feature is the connected tail-lamp design with distinctive three-point star lighting elements.

Inside, the GLB offers a redesigned cabin with the option of five- and seven-seat layouts. Mercedes claims enhanced space in all rows, with gains of up to 35 mm in the front, 68 mm in the middle row and 10 mm in the third row. The vehicle features the MBUX Superscreen, comprising a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and dual 14-inch displays for infotainment and the passenger-side interface. This system includes AI-powered voice assistance and embedded Google Maps, with the EV version factoring variables such as terrain, temperature, charging requirements and traffic when calculating routes. The co-driver display supports third-party video streaming apps.

Standard equipment includes a panoramic sunroof, while optional features include an electrochromic glass roof panel with adjustable opacity and an illuminated design with embedded star motifs. A Burmester 3D surround audio system with Dolby Atmos will also be offered as an upgrade.

Initially available as the GLB EV, the electric variant will be offered in 250+ and 350 configurations, powered by an 85kWh battery. The 250+ produces 268 BHP and 335 Nm with a single-motor setup, while the 350 offers dual-motor all-wheel drive with 349 BHP and 515 Nm. The 4MATIC system includes a disconnect feature for the front axle to improve efficiency when AWD is not required. Mercedes claims a maximum range of up to 631 km, depending on the configuration. The SUV uses 800V architecture for DC fast charging up to 320kW, with support for 400V charging available via an adapter, and 22kW AC charging offered as standard.

Suspension duties are handled by McPherson struts at the front and a multilink setup at the rear, with adaptive dampers available on select models in combination with 20-inch wheels.

For the ICE model, Mercedes confirms the use of a 48V mild-hybrid system paired with a new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine, allowing brief electric-only propulsion thanks to a 1.3kWh battery and integrated motor within an 8-speed DCT. Detailed output figures and specifications for these variants will be revealed at a later date.
