Tata Punch Crosses 6 Lakh Sales Under 4 Years, Becomes One Of The Best-Selling Model In The Brand’s Lineup

Tata Motors has achieved a major milestone with its micro SUV, the Punch, crossing 6 lakh unit sales in India. Launched in October 2021, the Punch reached this number in under four years. It is one of the most affordable and best-selling models in Tata’s lineup.

Tata Motors achieved a historic milestone in 2024 by making the Tata Punch India’s best-selling vehicle, marking a significant achievement. It has consistently outperformed rivals in the sub-compact SUV segment. The strong demand for the car highlights its appeal to first-time buyers and budget-conscious customers.

Sales Figures

In FY2025, the Punch accounted for 36% of Tata’s total passenger vehicle sales. It also commanded a 38% market share in the sub-compact SUV category. These figures highlight its dominance in the highly competitive entry-level SUV market.

Ownership trends show that 70% of ICE Punch buyers are new to car ownership. Additionally, women buyers make up 25% of Punch.ev owners. The Punch gained popularity across all regions and city tiers in India.

Sales distribution shows 24% of Punch customers are from tier-1 cities, 42% from tier-2, and 34% from tier-3 locations. This wide reach demonstrates the car’s strong connection with urban and semi-urban audiences. Its practical design and pricing have contributed to this appeal.

Market Competition

The Hyundai Exter, launched in July 2023, is the Punch’s biggest rival in the micro SUV space. By April 2025, it had sold 1.54 lakh units. Despite trailing the Punch, its growth indicates strong interest from new-age buyers.

The Exter targets tech-savvy youth with features such as a sunroof, connected technology, and a dual-cylinder CNG setup. It is offered in petrol, CNG, and electric options. In FY2025, it constitutes 20% of Hyundai’s total SUV sales.

Both the Tata Punch and Exter have received 5-star safety ratings from Global NCAP and Bharat NCAP. This safety record boosts buyer confidence in both models. Furthermore, it reflects the growing focus on crash safety in India’s entry-level car segment.
