MG Majestor to replace Gloster as flagship premium ICE SUV soon
MG Motor is preparing to reposition its large SUV portfolio with the Majestor, which is expected to replace the Gloster as the company’s flagship internal-combustion three-row SUV in India. While earlier indications suggested the two models could be sold together, industry sources now indicate that the Gloster will gradually be withdrawn from the lineup as the Majestor arrives.
The Majestor is scheduled for launch around April and is expected to be priced above Rs. 40 lakh (ex-showroom). Once introduced, it will compete in the premium full-size SUV space against established rivals such as the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq and Jeep Meridian.
Gloster’s market journey
When MG launched the Gloster in 2020, it entered the segment dominated by ladder-frame SUVs and positioned the model directly against the Toyota Fortuner and the then-available Ford Endeavour. Initial market response was strong, with thousands of bookings recorded early in its lifecycle and early production units quickly allocated.
However, sales momentum softened in the following years, with monthly volumes settling into the hundreds and later declining further toward the end of the model’s run. Special editions, including darker-themed variants introduced later, provided only limited support to demand.
What changes with the Majestor
The Majestor is built on the same basic platform as the Gloster rather than being an entirely new ground-up product. MG has focused on revising the exterior styling, adding new equipment and strengthening the SUV’s off-road capability.
Expected hardware includes features such as a low-range transfer case, crawl control functions and differential locking systems, suggesting an emphasis on terrain capability alongside premium positioning.
Segment strategy and production plans
The premium three-row SUV category in India remains relatively stable in volume terms, estimated at roughly 35,000 – 40,000 units annually, with Toyota’s Fortuner range continuing to lead the segment. Despite modest overall scale, the category remains strategically important for manufacturers due to higher pricing and stronger margins, along with its role in shaping brand perception.
MG is reportedly preparing production capacity of more than 1000 Majestor units per month. While the company has not publicly outlined specific sales targets, leadership has indicated that Indian buyers are increasingly willing to consider higher-priced vehicles, supporting continued focus on this segment.
