Mahindra XEV 9S

Mahindra is preparing to increase production of its all-electric XEV 9S SUV over the coming months as it looks to address rising demand and capacity limitations.

The Mahindra XEV 9S, which is based on the company’s Inglo platform, has witnessed strong initial traction since its market introduction in late 2025, with deliveries beginning earlier this year. Demand has been steady, with the automaker reporting thousands of orders within a short span of time.

However, Mahindra has acknowledged that current manufacturing constraints are limiting its ability to scale output immediately. The company has indicated that it expects to ease some of these bottlenecks over the next four to five months, which should allow production volumes to increase.

At present, Mahindra’s combined battery electric vehicle (BEV) production stands at slightly over 6000 units per month, against an installed capacity that is expected to reach around 8000 units monthly. The company is also planning further expansion, with additional capacity expected to be unlocked in phases.

Part of this future capacity is likely to be allocated to upcoming electric models, including a production version of the BE.07 concept, which is scheduled to arrive in the next few years. Beyond that, a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Nagpur is also under development and is expected to significantly enhance production capabilities once operational later in the decade.

Mahindra & Mahindra is positioning its electric vehicle portfolio as a key pillar of its long-term strategy. The brand currently has a modest share of EVs within its overall sales mix, but this is expected to rise steadily.

The company is targeting a substantial increase in EV penetration over the next five years, aiming to reach levels close to 20 percent. This push is partly aligned with upcoming regulatory requirements, including stricter fuel efficiency norms under CAFE III, which will come into effect from FY2028.

Mahindra’s broader electric roadmap includes multiple launches across segments. The company has outlined plans to introduce several new electric models by the end of the decade, building on its existing Born Electric lineup that includes models such as the XEV 9S, XEV 9e and BE 6.

With demand for electric SUVs on the rise and competition intensifying, Mahindra’s ability to scale production efficiently will play a critical role in sustaining growth and meeting customer demand.

While short-term constraints remain, Mahindra’s planned production ramp-up and continued investment in EV infrastructure indicate a clear intent to strengthen its position in India’s electric vehicle market. The coming months will be crucial as the company works to balance demand with supply while expanding its EV portfolio.
