BMW has silently launched the X1 M-Sport in India and the M-Sport is the only trim of the SUV to be available on sale now, until the new model arrives.

The current generation BMW X1 has been on sale in India since a while now and it is on its way out. The German automaker showcased the next generation X1 globally just a few months back and it is highly likely that the new X1 will make its way to Indian shores mostly by February 2016 when the Auto Expo is held. BMW India has now launched the X1 M-Sport in India and it has been priced at Rs. 37.90 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

The BMW X1 M-Sport is now the only variant available in the X1 line-up and this clearly indicates that the company is trying to clear its stock soon to make way for the new generation of the SUV. The X1 M-Sport comes with cosmetic tweaks like sporty front and rear bumpers, 18-inch alloys, M-Sport steering wheel which is leather-wrapped and some other minor changes to the insides.

On the mechanical front, the BMW X1 M-Sport continues to be powered by the same 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel engine that belts out 184 HP of power at 4000 RPM and 350 Nm of torque at 1750 RPM. The vehicle has an ARAI-tested fuel efficiency of 17.05 km/l. Power is sent to the rear wheels and the engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Except the cosmetic bits, there are no other changes to the X1 M-Sport.

The BMW X1 is pretty much outdated and hardly anyone prefers buying it now. It competes with the Mercedes GLA and the Audi Q3. While the GLA was launched early last year, the Q3 received an update just recently. The next generation X1 seems quite capable and it will be interesting to see whether it manages to beat Audi and Mercedes or not. Pricing also plays a key role in the battle though.
