Fiat India Automobiles, an equal joint venture between India’s Tata Motors and Fiat, will break even in 2011 and will sell 80,000 Fiat-branded cars in the year. Majority of the sales will be driven by the Linea and Grande Punto.
Fiat is a Turin, Italy based car manufacturer that was found in 1899. It is one of the most renowned car brands across the globe. The Fiat Group has had various acquisitions and shares with several brands such as Lancia, Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Chrysler. The Italian carmaker has various alliances and joint ventures across the globe. Fiat first entered the Indian market through Premier Automobiles then formed a joint venture with Tata Motors and now Fiat operates in India independently. Fiat has a wide range of products to offer across the globe including hatchbacks, sedans, SUVs and MPVs. In India, Fiat’s initial product range included Fiat Punto and Fiat Linea only.
Fiat India is considering raising prices of its cars as the margins are under pressure. While Tata Motors awaits funding from the UK Government, Fiat India has successfully managed to secure a loan of $510 million from the Citigroup. Hopefully some amount of the funding will go into training Tata Motors employees to do better servicing of Fiat cars.
