Citroen Compact SUV Spotted Rear Three Quarter
Citroen is taking a top-down approach when it comes to launching cars in India

Citroen is developing not 1, but 2 compact cars for India – the CC21 hatchback and CC21X crossover.

Up until now, the French carmaker was thought to be working on a sub-4 metre SUV code-named CC21. As it turns out, that codename is not used for the compact SUV, but to denote a hatchback that is under development.

We suspect the hatchback is based on the C3 model sold abroad that comes with crossover styling elements. The codename CC21X has been assigned to the compact SUV which is based on the C3 Aircross.

Both models are being developed under the brand’s ‘C Cubed’ programme and will be underpinned by its Common Modular Platform (CMP).

To keep manufacturing costs under check, both Citroen CC21 hatchback and CC21X compact SUV are expected to share the same dashboard layout, with the crossover getting a bit more features to justify the premium it will command over the hatch.

Spy shots of the cars that have surfaced online thus far indicate they will feature the biggest touchscreen for the infotainment system in their respective segments.

While the exterior styling too will be similar, with lots of elements shared between the models, Citroen will give the CC21X more rugged elements like beefier bumpers, taller stance and roof rails, to name a few.

Previous reports suggest that the carmaker will likely launch the CC21X compact crossover by the festive season this year and it is possible that the CC21 hatchback is also put on sale around the same time, if not before.

Much like the C5 Aircross that was launched earlier this month, both compact models of the carmaker will keep ‘comfort’ as their USP and should be powered by naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of a 1.2-litre petrol engine.

There will be no diesel engine on offer, but the turbo variant will get an automatic transmission option, with a 5-speed manual being the mainstay.

When they get launched, the Citroen CC21 hatchback will compete against the Tata Altroz, Maruti Baleno, among others, while the CC21X will rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Nissan Magnite, Kia Sonet, and the like.

What’s more, a third compact model, which will be an all-electric vehicle will also be introduced by the brand in due course of time.
