Verstappen wins in Las Vegas as McLaren’s disqualification reshapes F1 standings
Max Verstappen revived his 2025 Formula 1 title chances with victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix, a result that became even more significant after both McLaren drivers were disqualified post-race. While Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri initially finished inside the points, their removal from the classification has reshaped the title fight heading into the final two rounds.
Race Start and On-Track Battles
Verstappen moved into the lead at the very start, capitalising on a wide moment for Norris at Turn 1 that dropped the McLaren driver behind George Russell. Norris later recovered to second on the road but was unable to challenge Verstappen, who maintained control of the race throughout.
McLaren Disqualified for Plank Wear
Post-race scrutinising revealed excessive skid plank wear on both McLaren cars, falling below the minimum thickness required by FIA regulations. As a result, Norris and Piastri were removed from the results. Similar disqualifications have occurred earlier in the season, including those of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Hulkenberg.
McLaren attributed the excessive wear to unexpected porpoising, limited running due to poor weather and shortened practice sessions. The stewards noted these points but stated that the breach, though unintentional, still required penalty as per the rules.
Revised Podium and Points
With both McLarens excluded, Mercedes secured a double-podium finish. George Russell was promoted to second place, followed by teammate Kimi Antonelli, who had climbed through the field from 17th on the grid. Antonelli’s earlier five-second penalty for a false start had initially dropped him in the standings before the disqualifications altered the outcome.
Charles Leclerc finished fourth, followed by Carlos Sainz, Isack Hadjar and Nico Hulkenberg. Lewis Hamilton recovered to eighth after starting last and both Haas cars – Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman – rounded out the points.
Championship Picture Ahead of Final Races
The updated results leave Lando Norris still leading the championship, though his margin has reduced. Verstappen and Piastri are now tied on points, 24 behind Norris. With two rounds remaining, including a sprint in Qatar, a maximum of 58 points is still available.
The next race on the calendar is the Qatar Grand Prix, scheduled for November 28–30.
