Ford sold Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo to implement its One Ford Strategy, wherein the American automaker would make vehicles which could be sold through the four major continents where the company has presence. These four markets are Asia, Europe, Australia and America, where the company has significant presence. Now Ford has made it very clear that it does not plan to launch any India specific models and will instead launch vehicles based on global platforms. These global vehicles will be tweaked according to the needs of the Indian market.

Recently Ford announced a $1 billion investment in Gujarat for a new manufacturing facility. This new facility will churn out few of the 8 vehicles which Ford has lined up for the Indian market by 2015. The company feels it is too expensive to have a country specific model and instead prefers to have a global platform along with sufficient localisation to make vehicles more affordable at all stages, including R&D. Ford is betting heavily on the EcoSport compact SUV, which is already grabbing massive attention from prospective customers. The Ford EcoSport is one such vehicle, which will be manufactured in India but exported to global markets since day one.
