Mahindra Won’t Launch Electric Scorpio, Bolero, TUV300

Mahindra confirms there will be no electric versions of its SUVs that are based on a ladder frame chassis.

Pawan Goenka, a top executive at Mahindra recently confirmed that there will be no electric versions of the Mahindra ladder-frame SUVs. This means there will be no electric version of the Scorpio, Thar, TUV300 and Bolero. The company will instead focus on developing a whole new range of electric cars.

Mahindra will be developing electric cars that will primarily be city friendly, less bulky and more importantly affordable. These electric cars will have a range of 140-150 kms. Mahindra is putting a lot of effort and not just an investment in monetary terms, with running and testing being done on the upcoming electric cars.

SUVs with ladder frame chassis are heavy. Electrification of these SUVs doesn’t make sense and the costs associated with this is also very high. To suit the size of these massive SUVs, bigger batteries will be required, etc. Hence Mahindra has decided to stay away from the electrification of ladder frame SUVs.

The XUV maker already has the e2o, e-Verito and e-Supro in its electric fleet. The e2o and e-Verito have been around for a while but haven’t been able to churn out good volumes for the automaker. This is primarily due to the lower demand for electric vehicles. Mahindra expects the electric car market will pick up in India especially after the Government’s aim of making the Indian car market an all-electric car fleet. The automaker also intends to be at the forefront of the electric vehicles segment.
