Mahindra plans major EV ramp-up targeting 7000 monthly sales by fiscal-end
Mahindra is aiming to significantly scale up its electric vehicle operations, targeting monthly sales of around 7000 units by the end of the current financial year, compared to the present average of 4000 – 5000 units. The company plans to achieve this by increasing production capacity and expanding its EV portfolio, which recently grew with the introduction of the seven-seater XEV 9S.
According to company executives, Mahindra expects EVs to form nearly a quarter of its total sales volumes by 2027–28. To support this growth, the manufacturer is ramping up operations at its Chakan facility, where its born-electric models are produced. The EV range has already seen strong market traction, with the BE 6 and XEV 9 collectively crossing 30,000 units in sales over the past seven months, contributing roughly Rs. 8000 crores in revenue.
Mahindra also plans to strengthen its charging infrastructure, with a roadmap to install around 1000 charging points by 2027. These installations will prioritise busy public locations to improve accessibility for existing and future EV customers.
On the export front, the company intends to move in phases. It will initially focus on right-hand-drive markets before evaluating left-hand-drive regions, depending on demand and response. The approach is designed to avoid overextension as Mahindra scales its EV business globally.
With increasing EV penetration, Mahindra is assessing end-of-life battery solutions. The company noted that its electric three-wheeler range, being older, will likely face recycling requirements sooner than its newer SUV lineup. A dedicated team is working on long-term strategies for responsible battery disposal and material recovery.
To navigate potential supply chain disruptions, Mahindra is diversifying its sourcing plans across components and suppliers. The company confirmed that the entire XEV 9 range meets eligibility requirements under the government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. It also plans to apply for PLI certification for the BE 6 in the upcoming quarter, with approvals expected next financial year. Certification for the newly launched 9S is set to follow once production begins.
The XEV 9S is positioned in the Rs. 19.95 lakh to Rs. 29.45 lakh price bracket (ex-showroom), making it a key model in Mahindra’s effort to expand its electric SUV footprint in India.
