Maruti Suzuki to launch ethanol-compatible Fronx flex-fuel in India by 2026

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce a flex-fuel version of Fronx in India by 2026. The model was previewed as the Fronx FFV (Flex Fuel Vehicle) concept at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show 2025, where Suzuki’s parent company showcased the car’s ethanol-compatible capabilities.

The showcased Fronx FFV can operate on petrol containing up to 85 percent ethanol (E85), aligning with India’s long-term goals of expanding ethanol blending in conventional fuels. Although Maruti has not disclosed specific powertrain figures, the engine is designed to run on fuel blends ranging from E20 to E85. This means it will be compatible with India’s current E20-grade petrol while being future-ready for higher ethanol blends expected in the coming years.

The Indian government’s ethanol roadmap aims to raise blending levels to 30 percent within five years, making flex-fuel vehicles a key component of its cleaner mobility strategy.

Visually, the Fronx FFV remains nearly identical to its standard version. It retains the same dimensions – 3995 mm in length, 1765 mm in width and 1550 mm in height – with only distinct green decals identifying it as a flex-fuel model. The concept displayed in Japan features blacked-out alloy wheels and shares its platform and design with the India-spec Fronx.

In Japan, the Fronx is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine, available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox. It also offers Suzuki’s AllGrip Select all-wheel-drive system and an advanced driver assistance (ADAS) suite – features that could potentially make their way to the Indian market later.

The upcoming Fronx flex-fuel variant underscores Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to alternative fuel technologies and supports India’s broader shift toward sustainable and energy-efficient mobility solutions.
