Mercedes’ Vision Iconic concept blends Art Deco design, solar tech and next-gen luxury

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Vision Iconic concept coupe, offering a striking look at the future of the brand’s flagship S-Class and luxury design language. Showcased at the company’s design studio in Shanghai, the two-door concept blends classic elegance with cutting-edge innovation and sustainability.

A Blend of Heritage and Futurism

The Vision Iconic’s design borrows cues from several legendary Mercedes models. Its most distinctive element is a five-slat illuminated grille inspired by the 1900 Mercedes 35 PS and the 1956 300Sc, a feature first seen on the GLC EV. Unlike that SUV, the Vision Iconic positions the three-pointed star emblem above the nose rather than in the centre. The front also features sleek, pointed headlights with the star motif integrated into the design.

Art Deco Styling and Innovative Materials

With its long bonnet, swept-back roofline and polished brass accents, the Vision Iconic evokes the grandeur of Mercedes coupes from the 1930s. Massive seven-spoke aerodynamic wheels, curved fender vents and a minimalist rear end with slim LED tail lights complete its sculpted look.

A standout innovation is Mercedes’ experimental nanoparticle-based solar paint. The coating can capture sunlight and generate enough energy to extend driving range by up to 12,000 km per year under ideal conditions. It is also recyclable, does not use rare earth elements and continues producing power even when the car is stationary.

Lounge-Inspired Interior

Inside, the Vision Iconic features a design more akin to a luxury lounge than a traditional vehicle. A “Zeppelin” glass dashboard structure combines analog craftsmanship with digital interfaces, while a plush blue velvet front bench allows both occupants to sit side by side. A four-spoke steering wheel, complete with a glass-encased Mercedes logo, adds a vintage touch and the straw marquetry floor underscores the sustainable material approach.

Advanced Driving and Steering Technology

The prototype supports Level 2 autonomous driving capabilities for urban traffic, with plans for future Level 4 autonomy that would allow fully self-driven operation. The concept also debuts steer-by-wire technology, eliminating the physical connection between the steering wheel and front wheels. This, combined with rear-axle steering, is expected to enhance agility and simplify low-speed manoeuvres.

As a showcase of both Mercedes’ design heritage and its vision for sustainable, intelligent luxury mobility, the Vision Iconic concept offers a compelling preview of what the next generation of the S-Class and the brand’s electric future may look like.
