Renault is preparing to expand its alternative fuel portfolio in India with the introduction of a factory-fitted CNG option for the Renault Triber. The updated version of the compact MPV will feature a dual-cylinder CNG setup integrated beneath the vehicle floor, addressing one of the key limitations of existing dealer-installed kits.
The move will make Renault the fourth automaker in India to offer factory-fitted CNG solutions, following Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India.
Underfloor CNG Layout To Preserve Practicality
Unlike the currently available dealer-level CNG kits that occupy a significant portion of the boot, Renault’s upcoming factory-fitted solution will use two cylinders positioned under the vehicle. This layout is designed to retain usable luggage space, a key consideration for MPV buyers.
A similar dual-cylinder concept was previously seen on the Nissan Gravite, although that setup compromised boot space due to vertically stacked cylinders. Renault’s underfloor integration is aimed at offering a more practical alternative.
Turbo-Petrol Engine To Power CNG Variant
In addition to the CNG upgrade, the Triber is also expected to receive a more powerful engine option. The factory-fitted CNG kit will be paired with a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, which is currently used in the Renault Kiger.
This marks a shift from the existing naturally aspirated setup, potentially improving performance while maintaining lower running costs associated with CNG.
Platform Updates And Wider Rollout Plans
To accommodate the new CNG system, Renault has updated its CMF-A platform, which underpins both the Triber and Kiger. The revised architecture, now referred to as the Renault Global Entry Platform (RGEP), has been adapted to support alternative fuel configurations.
The same turbo-CNG powertrain is also expected to be introduced on the Kiger, indicating a broader rollout strategy across Renault’s entry-level lineup.
Launch Timeline And Market Context
The factory-fitted CNG variants are likely to be introduced around the festive season, with a launch window expected between September and October 2026. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed, though the new setup could command a premium over the existing dealer-installed kits.
Renault’s decision comes amid rising demand for CNG vehicles in India. The fuel type has gained significant traction in recent years, particularly in cost-sensitive segments, and has emerged as one of the most popular choices among buyers due to its lower running costs.
