MoRTH Urges Drivers To Update Mobile Numbers Linked To Driving Licence

MoRTH advises updating mobile numbers on driving licences to avoid delays or suspension

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued an advisory urging all driving licence holders to ensure that their registered mobile numbers are active and accurate. The ministry has warned that outdated or inactive numbers could lead to delays in licence renewals or, in some cases, even temporary suspension of the licence.

According to MoRTH, all official communication related to a driving licence – such as challans, penalty notifications and renewal reminders – is sent to the mobile number linked with the licence. When this number is incorrect or inactive, licence holders may fail to receive crucial alerts, potentially resulting in administrative delays or compliance issues.

To address this, the government has simplified the process of updating mobile numbers through the official Parivahan portal or respective state transport department websites. The update procedure requires basic information verification and authentication through a one-time password (OTP).

Steps to update your mobile number:

  1. Visit parivahan.gov.in or your state’s transport department website.
  2. Select Update Mobile Number under Driving Licence Services.
  3. Verify your details using the OTP sent to your registered number.
  4. Save the confirmation for future reference.

Authorities have also encouraged individuals to assist senior citizens in checking and updating their details, as many older licences may still be linked to outdated or inactive numbers.

Keeping the contact information current ensures that drivers receive all official alerts on time, avoiding unnecessary fines, renewal delays, or licence suspension.
