The unveil of the much-awaited Volkswagen Taigun has taken place. This brand-new compact SUV will, once put on sale, become the most affordable model of its kind in the carmaker’s Indian portfolio.

Built on the MQB-A0-IN platform, the same as the Skoda Kushaq, the Taigun also has the same 2651 mm wheelbase as the Czech carmaker’s product.

It has a typical Volkswagen design, sporting a relatively small front grille which sits between the sleek headlight units. The air dam sits below the grille, flanked by fog lights that are encompassed by a chrome applique on the bumper. A small skid plate on the bottom completes the front profile.

As is the case with most cars of its ilk, the Taigun also sports body cladding on the lower portion and on the wheel arches. A prominent shoulder line that is accompanied by another crease runs along the middle of the doors, while on top, the window area with a rising beltline is present. Also, there are roof rails.

At the rear, the tailgate is dominated by the full-width lighting section which has a smoked effect. The tailgate itself is decent-sized, while the bumper, apart from having a skid plate, also has a chrome applique just like the bumper upfront.

Volkswagen will offer the compact SUV in multiple variants and sitting on top of them would be the Taigun GT. The car will come with features such as LED headlamps, a digital instrument cluster, 10-inch infotainment touchscreen, ventilated front seats, a sunroof, among several others.

Along with the Volkswagen Taigun unveil, the German carmaker let out details about the turbo petrol engines which will power the car which will not get any diesel option.

The smaller engine will be a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder TSI unit good for 115 PS and 175 Nm of torque. It will be mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque converter automatic.

The largest engine available with the car will be a 1.5-litre turbo petrol making 150 PS and 250 Nm. It can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DSG.

When it comes to safety, the Volkswagen Taigun will be specced with a maximum of 6 airbags, while all passengers will get adjustable headrests. In addition, there will be ESC as standard, ISOFIX mounts, hill-hold control and the car will ride on 205/55-section rubber wrapped around 17-inch rims.
