The Mahindra Scorpio was launched in 2002 and will complete 10 years this year. In these 10 years, the Scorpio has achieved massive success for Mahindra, with the latest feast being the sale of 50000 units last year. Now the Scorpio has never got a major update, with the biggest changes being more powerful engines and new powertrains. Mahindra has kept updating the Scorpio with more features over time but never did the company make changes to the shape of the Scorpio. There is no doubt then, the Scorpio is too old and needs a major update soon.

Mahindra is already said to be working on the next generation Scorpio, which is codenamed W105. It will be an all new model with major changes. The new Scorpio will be launched in the Indian market in 2014 and will continue to use a ladder frame layout. The new Scorpio will be bigger than the current version and will be more spacious as well. The lack of legroom in the second row will be addressed in the next generation Scorpio. This inside news was leaked by Autocar India editor Hormazd Sorabjee on Twitter.

While details about the next generation Mahindra Scorpio is still sketchy, one can expect lots of features from the XUV500 trickling down to the Scorpio. A more powerful version of the mHawk diesel engine might be offered as well. Lessons from the lightweight Scorpio project (codenamed T026) could be incorporated, which would boost the fuel efficiency of the Scorpio. The new Scorpio is being developed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai. Mahindra is already selling the Scorpio in the European market (as the Goa) and special attention is being given to the pick-up version of the Scorpio as it holds high importance for Mahindra in the export markets.
