SsangYong Rexton W Launch India

Mahindra has announced the launch of the SsangYong Rexton W in the Indian market, which is brought in as a CKD from Korea. The Rexton is in its third generation and the next generation model will be developed by Mahindra (at Chakan) for domestic and export markets. The Rexton is available as a 7-seater. The vehicle is badged as SsangYong Rexton by Mahindra and thus there is ‘by Mahindra’ badge on the tail gate. The SsangYong Rexton is powered by a 2696 cc diesel engine which has 5-cylinders and is offered in two set of tunes. The manual Rexton (RX270 XDi) produces 162 BHP of power at 4000 RPM and 340 Nm of torque between 1800-3250 RPM. The RX270 XDi Rexton has a top speed of 180 km/hr returning an ARAI certified mileage of 12.4 km/l. The RX270 XVT produces 184 BHP of power at 4000 RPM and 402 Nm of torque between 1600-3000 RPM (Mahindra even compared this engine with the Skoda Superb!). This variant of the Rexton has a top speed of 194 km/hr and returns 11.18 km/l mileage as per ARAI.

SsangYong Rexton W Prices – (on-road, Mumbai)

The Rexton has a standard 2-years, 1-lakh kms warranty with an extra 1-year 1-lakh kms warranty being offered as an extended option. Mahindra has achieved 22% localization with the Rexton. SsangYong Rexton Engine

There are two variants available – RX5 MT (TOD) and RX7 AT (AWD), weighing 2000 kgs and 1986 kgs respectively. The torque on demand variant has an intelligent 4×4 torque on demand system (TOD) with low ratio. Thus both variants get 4×4 and are mated to 5-speed gearboxes. The RX5 variant has a 5-speed manual gearbox, while the RX7 has a 5-speed automatic gearbox (called E-tronic AT), with paddle shifts on the steering wheel. The Rexton has all-wheel disc brakes along with active rollover protection, anti-slip regulation, electronic stability program, hill descent control. Not all features are available in the RX5 variant, with some being available only on the top-end RX7 variant. The SsangYong Rexton is available in 4 colors – white, silver, black and purple.

The new Rexton W will be sold in 60 markets globally. India will be the second biggest export market for SsangYong. The Rexton is the leader in the premium SUV market for Korea. Mahindra is working with SsangYong to develop compact UVs, which will be positioned below the Rexton. The plant capacity for the Rexton assembly is pegged at 5000 units per year. The Rexton is being sold through the existing Mahindra dealership network.

5 cylinder Chinese engine, mileage in 12kmpl mark, which car they plan to compete with ?

    • Abhi

It’s from South Korea dude not from china….
      Don’t comment with half knowledge…. :P

    • No One

In that case I guess Toyota Fortuner now has a real competition

    • Anand

Yes, Abhi .. right. And also I remember this was one of the Benz engine and design specs bought by SsangYong and tuned for their SUVs.

  • Suraj

Please understand difference between Chinese and Korean.
Korean brands are much superior in quality than Chinese.
Hyundai, Kia, Samsung and many more originates from Korea.

    • Anand

Last year, Hyundai got appreciation from Honda’s CEO, for their quality and new design.

    • SP Singh

Wow you are so learned Suraj!

  • bhavesh

@suraj you are right koreans are different.and theere technology is best

  • Robin

True that, i agree with Suraj. Hyundai is providing gud quality cars in India. Ssyangyong can be expected to provide the same.

    • Anand

I am in Seoul on an assignment and I see SY SUVs build quality is much better than the Chinese one. I like them except the front face. :) Even I believe they have a good share in China, I have seen these SUVs in Shanghai often.

  • Abhi

Yes guys Mahindra are looking so aggressive to dominate the market….
And it’s their first premium SUV in the market with loads of features than it’s competitors..
    Good work mahindra…
All the best for your future launches… :D

  • Ex VW fan!

Looks like the hate child of a Mercedes and Infiniti SUV!

Front end looks half decent. The rear end- Dont even know where to begin complaining!!

    Nice try!

  • Tushar

A little more agressive pricing would have made the vehicle a big threat for Endy, Fortuner, Santa Fe and Koleos.

  • parag patil

    New Chevrolet Captiva :)
2.2 diesel engine comes in two states of tune; the lower output of 163bhp drives only the front wheels while the more powerful 184bhp version powers both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive versions
