Tata Zest Test Drive Review
The Zest XTA comes with airbags, alloy wheels, reverse parking sensors

The Tata Zest compact sedan was launched last year amidst great pomp and optimism. The Zest is leagues ahead of other Tata vehicles and it performs extremely well too. However, after the initial surge in sales, the Zest started selling in reduced numbers and lost out to rivals like the Maruti Swift DZire, Honda Amaze and Hyundai Xcent. Tata launched the AMT variant of the Zest which is the cheapest diesel automatic available in India as of now. The AMT gearbox was initially offered only with the mid XM variant and it was called XMA. Now, Tata Motors has launched the XTA variant of the vehicle. The XTA variant is basically the XT variant now mated to the AMT gearbox.

The Tata Zest XTA comes with the features of the XMA and additionally it gets dual airbags, reverse parking sensors and alloy wheels. While the XMA variant comes with a regular ConnectNext Infotainment system from Harman, the XTA variant gets a touchscreen version of the ConnectNext infotainment system. The multimedia system gets additional features like phone controls and voice commands. There are no other changes made to the model. The Tata Zest XTA is priced at Rs. 8.42 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai with octroi), Rs. 8.03 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai without octroi) and Rs. 8.07 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Tata offers the Zest with a 1.2-litre Revotron turbocharged petrol engine producing 90 PS of power and 140 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The diesel variants get a 1.3-litre Multijet engine giving out 75 PS and 90 PS of power with 190 Nm and 200 Nm of torque respectively. The AMT gearbox is offered only with the 90 PS trim and it returns a claimed fuel efficiency of 21.58 km/l. The other variants of the Zest are priced between 4.85 – 7.31 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) and this addition of a new variant is a good move by Tata Motors because the XTA variant gets airbags as standard.
