BMW had unveiled the new 5-Series officially last year and it is based on BMW’s CLAR (Cluster Architecture) platform and now over a year later the luxury sedan has been launched in India. The 5-Series borrows extensively from the flagship 7-Series and has also grown in terms of dimensions when compared to its predecessor.

Starting with the exteriors, the new 5-Series is larger and lighter than its predecessor. Measuring 4936 mm in length, 1868 mm in width and 1479 mm in height, the new 5-Series almost looks a baby 7-Series. The headlamps are slimmer units now and house the traditional LED Corona Rings. The BMW trademark kidney grille underlines the strong presence of the front and has chrome surrounds that make the 5-Series look more daunting. The light guides below the headlights again, are an inspiration from the 7-Series.

Coming to the side, one can notice the sharp character line that runs all the way from the front fender to meet the tail-lamps. There’s also an air-breather on both the front doors that channels air to the front wheels. At the rear, the bumper gets a sporty look while the LED tail-lights look distinctive. The integrated spoiler on the boot lid brings in a lot of drama to the rear. For the India-spec 5-Series, the automaker has given a space saver spare wheel too.

Get inside and one can instantly tell, the interiors have vastly evolved. The front seats are larger and more accommodating. Quality of materials on the inside is a huge improvement. The rear bench is the place most of the buyers of the car would be occupying, offering good space as well as a remote for operating the infotainment from the rear seat.

The instrument panel is all digital and gets the Gesture Control feature through which the infotainment system can be operated. Some other features offered on the sedan include adaptive LED headlamps, 4-zone climate control, iDrive with a 10.25-inch display, 360-degree camera, wireless phone charging, remote parking function via BMW Display Key and a Harmon Kardon audio system.

For the Indian markets, BMW has now launched the 530d (with M-Sport package as standard) that comes with a 3.0-litre, inline-six, diesel engine producing 265 HP and 620 Nm of torque and the 520d that sports a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder, diesel engine producing 190 HP of power. BMW is also offering the 530i that packs a 2.0-litre petrol motor that is good enough for 252 HP. All the engines come with a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

The 2017 BMW 5-Series competes with the newly launched Mercedes E-Class LWB along with the Jaguar XF, Audi A6 and Volvo S90.
